Ferguson Earth Day & ASLA: "So tell me, what IS A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT?"

Introducing Middle School Students to the WORLD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
On April 18th, 500 middle school students from Ferguson gathered in January Wabash Park to celebrate Earth Day. Waiting to greet them, was a fantastic ASLA booth, made possible by the talents of Jeff Davis, ASLA, RLA, of HOK. Jeff created stunning layouts that tell the story of landscape architecture and its connection to St Louis and Ferguson. Jeff grew up in Ferguson and has seen an early love of landscape architecture be the vehicle that propeled his career. The students were mightily impressed with the fact that somebody from their neighborhood had a job that took him to China, India and other foreign destinations they only dream of. The day was marked with beautiful moments when a child SAW that they too could pursue a career that would have such an impact on the earth. Many kids had a hard time describing what an architect did, much less an landscape architect; by the end of their short time at the ASLA booth, the inspiration was evident.
This type of advocacy for the profession is necessary and extremely rewarding! ETV sends a HUGE THANKS to Jeff Davis and to HOK for preparing the boards and spending a rapid-fire day with 500 AMAZING KIDS. We are also thankful for the amazing folks in Ferguson, especially Elizabeth Simons of Ferguson Live Well, who make all these things happen!

The High Performance Building Initiative (HPBI) aims to increase the square footage of third-party verified green space in the St. Louis region, which is an important indicator of our commitment to a more sustainable regionEducational programs, information exchanges and a new website will focus on improving the performance of existing buildings, which will reduce the impact of buildings on the natural environment, improve indoor air quality and save money on energy bills.

HPBI grew from the St. Louis Greenprint 2012 - an action plan for growing the St. Louis region's green economy. The RCGA, USGBC-Missouri Gateway and others developed the Greenprint's objectives to accelerate the market for green products and services through increased activity around green building, design and renovation.

Currently, nine local building stakeholder organizations have agreed to be HPBI signatories and include:

  • American Society of Landscape Architects - St. Louis Chapter
  • American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers - St. Louis Chapter
  • Associated General Contractors - St. Louis
